  1. The Sun is, although special to us,
  2. is a rather average star by all accounts.
  3. This image is of the Sun through special
  4. filters taken from the Skylab space station. 
  5. The large loop on the left is a solar flare,
  6. one of the largest seen, which is a sudden
  7. explosion of energy from active areas. This 
  8. example is the "Great Flare" of 1974 which
  9. reached out about 250,000 miles (the distance
  10. between the Earth and Moon). The 
  11. bright spots on the disk are other flares 
  12. coming toward us.
