- The Sun is, although special to us,
- is a rather average star by all accounts.
- This image is of the Sun through special
- filters taken from the Skylab space station.
- The large loop on the left is a solar flare,
- one of the largest seen, which is a sudden
- explosion of energy from active areas. This
- example is the "Great Flare" of 1974 which
- reached out about 250,000 miles (the distance
- between the Earth and Moon). The
- bright spots on the disk are other flares
- coming toward us.
